Cars and Motorcycles

Renting a car is now much easier than it has been in the past and certain situations require the use of a personal vehicle. Various companies can arrange cars and drivers to suit your needs for a reasonable price.

Cities

It isn’t likely that the average student in China will need to rent a car to get around the city, but the option does exist if you’re interested in taking a short weekend trip to the countryside or a nearby city. International car rental companies like Avis operate in China and tourism websites like Ctrip also rent out sedans and luxury cars. In general, though, it’s very easy to take buses and trains wherever you need to go; think carefully about whether it is worth the money to rent a car.

Another more popular option for urban transport is to buy an electric scooter. A scooter runs completely on batteries and a new one should cost anywhere from 1500 RMB to 3500 RMB and above. Consider buying a cheap used one from a local expat website’s classified section.

4-Wheel Drive and SUVs

Sometimes it’s necessary to rent something more powerful. Some rural areas have poor, dirt roads that can’t easily be reached, especially in western and south western provinces. If you’re planning an independent trip off the beaten track, it’s best to work closely with a tour operator to find out the best route and which type of vehicle you should take.

Since only particular parts of China require the use of this type of vehicle, it’s best to inquire locally about how to hire them. Sometimes small tour operators rent them out and it is probably easiest to contact them through a local hotel or travel agency.

Driver’s Licenses and Personal Drivers

China does not recognize international driver’s licences or licenses from any other country. If you want to drive your own vehicle (including motorcycles and, in some cities, electric scooters) you must obtain a Chinese license. This can sometimes be a complicated process, though the test can be taken in English.

Some foreigners ride motorcycles without licences in China. This isn’t recommended. If the police catch you riding without a license they will generally confiscate your motorcycle.

Hiring a driver is a more popular option. Prices for hiring drivers can vary depending on the location and his language ability. A driver in Beijing or Shanghai that speaks decent English will cost more than a driver in a poorer part of the country that doesn’t speak English. Any car rental agency will be able to provide you with a driver.
