Project 211 is a program undertaken by the Chinese government to create world-class institutions in China. Project 211 schools are centers of high-quality research and instruction. There are just over 100 Project 211 schools in China today and the government has invested tens of billions of RMB into developing them since the beginning of the project in 1996.
The program involves three main parts. Institutional capacity is emphasized in Project 211 schools. Professors with high-levels of academic credentials are being trained and recruited for work in Project 211 institutions. Likewise, state-of-the art research facilities and materials are provided to ensure research results.
Another main part of Project 211 is the emphasis on certain key areas of academic development. These include areas of scientific and technological development and national defense. The third part of the program is the development of a public service system of higher education, encouraging the cooperation of researchers and academicians from various institutions.
A few examples of Project 211 schools include Tsinghua University, Peking University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Fudan University, Wuhan University and Beijing Foreign Studies University.
