Interview Record: Southeast University

Host: Hello everyone, we are here again for another interview and this time it is about Southeast University. First question, can you please briefly introduce to us your university.

XuJian: Thank you. Southeast University (SEU), as one of the oldest higher-learning institutes in China, was founded in 1902. It is a national key institute of higher learning administered directly under the Ministry of Education of China (MOE). It is also one of the top 20 universities among 2,000 Chinese higher-learning institutes, and it is a university in the Project of 211 and 985. Our university is located in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province, a most developed province in China. It has campuses of Sipailou ,Jiulonghu and Dingjiaqiao, covering a total area of 427 hectares. Since 1956, SEU has begun to enroll overseas students from over 60 countries. We have established close cooperation and exchanges with over 30 foreign countries and more than 100 universities and institutes.

Host: What specialties does your school offer?

XuJian: Now SEU has developed into a comprehensive university with a strong engineering background, whose full-time students are over 28,000, among whom 10,000 are postgraduates. Among all the 3,000 faculty, there are 1,300 full and associate professors, 11 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Engineering, SEU boasts 20 post-doctoral stations, 11 state-level key disciplines, 3 national key laboratories, 2 national research centers of engineering technology, 6 key laboratories and 4 research centers of engineering of MOE. Moreover, SEU offers 64 Bachelor's programs, 210 Master's programs and 112 Ph.D. programs in science, engineering, medicine, art, economics and management.

Host: Can one study their courses in English?

XuJian: Yes of course, we offer English-taught degree programs such as bachelor's program of architecture, clinical medicine, and master's program of international business. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds 15, we'll open the program. The programs are tailored for international students and the faculties involved are very knowledgeable and with the rich experience in teaching and academic research home and abroad.
 

Host: What are the things that the students can look forward to from your university?

XuJian: If the student joins our Chinese-taught programs, they will study all the courses together with our Chinese students. We will designate some excellent Chinese students to give them help in study, and the teachers will also offer them additional help if necessary. On the other hand, if the student joins the English-taught programs, they will find the programs specially designed to catering to their background and need. For example, in the English-taught master's program of international business, the international students are exposed to the developing China through visiting various enterprises in Jiangsu and neighboring region. These activities are arranged in their tour-study week.
 

Host: How many international students are there in your university? What course do they usually take?

XuJian: This year SEU has admitted 10 Ph. D students, 40 postgraduate students, 100 undergraduate students and 35 non-degree students. There are 60 students from Asia, 60 students from Africa, 30 students from Europe, 28 students from America and two from Oceania. The English-taught bachelor's program of clinical medicine, architecture, and the English-taught master's program of international business will start by the end of this month, and other programs have already begun. So if you start right now, you can apply for the above mentioned programs. If the number of applicants for Chinese language and culture exceeds 10, we are ready to open a separate class for the new applicants.

In the past three years, we have more and more qualified applicants. Each of the programs has its own characteristics. It's hard to say which is more popular. The Chinese-taught programs of architecture and medicine, the English-taught programs of clinical medicine and international business have admitted more international students than others.

Host: Will there be any changes of study plan in year 2010?

XuJian: We design our recruitment plan for 2010 based on this year's plan, with the expectation that we'll have an increasing-number of qualified applicants for each program. But we are market-oriented, so if the international education market has any new demand, we are ready to design new programs.
 

Host: What are the other things that your school offers?

XuJian:We offer scholarship to some applicants for the postgraduate programs, and we give priority to the applicants for the Ph. D programs. After the international students begin their study, if they can prove the academic excellence, they will get scholarship.

Host: What about the university accommodation situation?

XuJian: International students can apply for the dormitory scattered in all the three main campuses.Sipailou campus and Dingjiaqiao campus are located in the different parts of the downtown areas, where the transportation is very convenient and there are many entertainment facilities and restaurants outside the two campuses. Jiulong Lake campus is located in the southern part of Nanjing, where there is beautiful natural scenery, many facilities for physical exercises and the largest library of SEU. The school bus and the public transportation system make it easy for the students to commute between the Jiulong Lake campus and the downtown area within 40 minutes. The monthly accommodation fee of a room is around 1000RMB, and other monthly expenses including food, transportation and entertainment is between 1000RMB and 3000RMB.
