Dalian Nationalities University (DNU) is located in Dalian, the famous coastal city of China. It is under the direct jurisdiction of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission (SEAC). It is the only nationalities university located in the northeast and coastal regions of China and strong in the disciplines of engineering and applied subjects. The school founding work initiated in 1984. In 2006, SEAC, Liaoning provincial government and Dalian Municipal Government agreed to construct DNU together.
There are two campuses in DNU, the Development Zone Campus and the Jinshitan Campus, with a total area of 775,900 square meters. The build-up area is 488,800 square meters, among which the teaching and administration occupies 282,300 square meters. The total value of teaching and research equipment amounts to 240 million Yuan. There are 7 main disciplines: engineering, science, economics, management, liberal arts, law, and fine arts, and offers 45 specialties for undergraduates. There are about 13,859 registered students (13,589 undergraduate students, 240 preparatory students, 30 graduate students) and 161 joint-program graduates. 60% percent of the students are from ethnic groups, and over 80% of the students come from ethnic minority regions and western parts of China. There are 1,288 staff members in total in DNU, among whom there are 785 full-time faculty members. 35% have doctorial degrees, 87.6% master degrees. 51% are associate professors, and 15.5% professors.
The university has been giving priority to education quality of undergraduates. It has established 6 leading specialties at the national level, 5 key laboratories at state, SEAC and provincial levels, 3 provincial and SEAC research bases, 2 provincial and SEAC engineering research centers. Since 2008, DNU has presided over 3 state key development scheme projects in basic research, 2 state supported scientific scheme projects, 44 natural science fund projects, 10 social science fund projects, 345 provincial scientific research projects. 719 items applied for national patents, 427 were permitted. So far, DNU faculty members have published 2632 research papers in total, among which 815 was catalogued by Science Citation Index (SCI), Index to Scientific and Technical Proceedings (ISTP), Engineering Index (EI), 83 academic works, 56 text books, presided over 150 municipal and provincial key projects. In 2005, DNU was awarded 2 the second state-level prizes of "Outstanding Achievements in Education", 13 prizes of Liaoning "Outstanding Achievements in Education". In 2006, DNU was judged as the first group "National College English Education Reform Models". In 2007, DNU won the title of Excellence in Teaching Quality Evaluation of the Ministry of Education. In 2010, it was ratified as "National Education System Reform Pilot School".
The employment rate of the graduates has remained above 90% for the consecutive 11 years since 2001. In 2010, DNU was honored with the Top 50 High-employment-rate Model Universities. In recent years, DNU has won many other honors and titles, such as the title of the State Model University of College Student Volunteers in Serving the West, Liaoning Provincial Employment Advanced Group, the Employment Advanced Group of SEAC, Liaoning Provincial College Student Entrepreneurship Education Model School, the State Ethnic Group Unity and Advancement Model Collectives in 2009 and the Model Unit awarded by Liaoning provincial government and provincial Party Committee in 2011.
