Jimei University, one of the key universities in Fujian Province, is a multi-disciplined university with students from all over the country.
Jimei University enjoys a long history of over 90 years. Its origin can be traced back to Jimei Normal School founded by the famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Chen Jiageng (Tan Kah Kee) in 1918. The school motto Sincerity and Perseverance was set up by Mr. Chen Jiageng and his younger brother Mr. Chen Jingxian(Tan Keng Hean). In 1994, Jimei University was combined into one by five independent institutes and colleges, namely, Jimei Navigation Institute, Xiamen Fisheries College, Fujian Physical Education College, Jimei Finance and Economics Institute and Jimei Teachers College.
With the strong educational strength and perfect conditions, Jimei University has an integration of 20 colleges and offers 56 postgraduate programs, 2 course master’s programs in 10 fields and 63 undergraduate programs in eight disciplines: Engineering, Agronomy, Economics, Administration, Pedagogy, Science, Literature, and Law. It was granted qualification to get ready for offering doctorate programs in 2009. Presently, Jimei University has a total enrolment of more than 26,000 full-time students and over 1500 full-time teachers, among whom, over 180 professors and 550 associate professors. It has 4 characterized major construction projects at the national level, one state-level teaching team, one state-level modal center for experimental teaching, 11 characterized major construction projects at the provincial level, 37 provincial quality courses, 7 provincial teaching teams, 4 provincial or ministerial key laboratories and research centers，and 11 provincial key disciplines as well. The University has an area of more than 2300 mu (1mu=666.7m2), with a floor space of over 1,020,000 square meters. In 2009 the constructions of the new campus was elected one of the “100 Major and Classical Construction Projects” over the 60 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Jimei University is the only university winning the award. It has 10G Ethernet to the campus network. Its library has a total collection of more than 2.22 million volumes, with over 2,800 newspapers and magazines in both Chinese and foreign languages. The library also owns a Digital Information Retrieval Center.
Jimei University has gained a strong support and attention from the CPC Central Committee and the State Council. Former President Jiang Zemin personally presented the inscription and inscribed the name of Jimei University. Other leaders of the Central Committee such as Li Peng, Qiao Shi and Li Lanqing also made specific inscriptions to the development of Jimei University. Li Lanqing cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony and inspected the University to give his guidance on several occasions. In 2004, Jia Qinglin, member of Standing Committee of Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the National Committee of CPPCC also inspected Jimei University and unveiled the bronze statue of Mr. Chen Jiageng.
Jimei University owns excellent teaching quality and outstanding school characteristics. Running the university in the spirit of Chen Jiageng, cultivating talents with the personality of sincerity and perseverance is its distinctive feature. For many years, its applicants are sufficient and of good quality. The employment rate of graduates is on the top among the universities in Fujian Province. It passed the evaluation by the Ministry of Education for undergraduate education with flying colors in 2008. Maritime education and Fisheries are the main features and specialties of Jimei University. Its maritime education tops the nation and has great impact at home and abroad. It serves as an important training base to cultivate skills of the senior seafarers in China. And the discipline of fisheries has certain advantages and influence in the nation.
Jimei University has set up its goal in the twelfth “Five-Year Plan”. It will continue to give priority to undergraduate education and develop postgraduate education positively. It aims to cultivate creative and applied talents catering to the needs of the local development, of the nation and of the different industries, and to preliminarily build itself into one famous multi-disciplined university with distinguishing features, high level and strong competitiveness in China.
