1. Wuhan Institute of Physical Education (WIPE) Introduction
The Wuhan Institute of Physical Education's origins can be traced back to Zhongnan Institute of Physical Education, in Nanchang City, Jiang Xi Province. The Zhongnan Institute was formed in 1953.Shortly after, in 1955, the institute moved to its present site in Wuhan,Hubei Province, and changed its name to the Wuhan institute of Physical Education(WIPE) in February of 1956.WIPE was formerly administered by the National General Administration of Sports and,now it is under the aegies of both the National General Administration of Sports and the Hubei Provincial Government.
WIPE has two campuses which are Majiazhuang Campus and Canglong Campus. It covers an area of more than 120 hectares. Majiazhuang Campus located beside scenic East Lake covers an area of over 56 hectares, Its many sports facilities, such as, the Asian Boating Training Center, Sports Training and Testing Center, internet facility and others ,all serve the varied needs of competitive sports. And Canglong Campus with beautiful environment is located in Canglong Island Developing Zone of Jiangxia,Wuhan. At WIPE,there are all kinds of indoors and outdoors sports buildings, class-- rooms buildings, and advanced research facilities. Furthermore, books in the library are up to more than 800,000 volumes.
On WIPE's faculty there are a number of experts and trainers who are well known in China and abroad. Altogether WIPE has a staff of 812,of which over 500 are professional teachers and trainers. And, of these, over 60 are professors, researchers and national trainers; 165 are associate professors;3 posts are for Chutian Scholar visiting professors;10 are Hubei Outstanding Contributions Experts; 10 experts get the subsidy of the State Council and provincial government.
WIPE is organized into nine schools ,two departments, and three units etc. Included are the academic schools and departments of: Physical Education School, Sports Training school,Chinese Martial Arts school, Gymnastics School, Sports Economy & Management School , Sports Health & Science School, Competitive Sports School, Adult Education School, Sports Physical Science School, Sports Information & Technology Department, Sports Journalism & Foreign Language Department, the Postgraduate Unit, Political Theory Unit and Training Unit etc.
WIPE has thirteen undergraduate-major programs in physical education and related fields and eight graduate-major programs in physical education and related fields.Currently,WIPE recruits foreign students. In July of 2005, the Degree Office of the State Council ratified that our school became the Educational Unit of First Sports Master's Professional Degree in the whole country.
In January of 2006, with the approval of Degree Committee of the State Council, our school became the Conferring Unit of Doctor's Degree which formally gave the qualification of recruiting and training doctors. At present, WIPE’s student population stands at about 10,000 full-time students, including 600 postgraduates. There are an additional 3,500 adults enrolled in WIPE's continuing education programs.
WIPE has undertaken many research projects under the sponsorship of the National Natural Science fund and National Social Science fund and has also undertaken key, provincial, research projects, WIPE has received many awards for scientific and technological accomplishments and has been awarded national patents for inventions. In December 2001, the National General Administration of Sports gave WIPE the designation of "key research base for sports social science." In July 2003, Hubei Education Department gave the institute the designation of "Hubei sports industry research center."
WIPE excels in competitive sports and has developed superior,sports skills programs, such as, for boating and martial arts. It also produced many outstanding athletes who, like Olympic gymnastics champion Yangwei, have brought glory to China in international competition. Students successively won 326 gold medals, 236 silver medals, 269 bronze medals in international and domestic great matches such as the Olympic Games, Asian Games, and National Games. WIPE is recipient of the National General Administration of Sports "Award for Contributions to Success in Sports," and WIPE has been designated as "national, elite athletes’ training base for boating" and the "national training base for Chinese martial arts for young athletes."
International academic exchange is another area to which the institute has attached great importance, To date, sound working relationships on exchange and cooperation have been established with some 20 institutes of physical education in countries, such as, the United States, France, Germany, Japan, Vietnam, Ukraine, as well as Taiwan and Hong Kong in China. Nationally, WIPE cooperates with some 30 provinces and cities, as well as with several physical education associations in China.
