Wuhan Polytechnic (WHPT) is an institution of higher vocational education set up independently for full-time education by the approval of China’s Ministry of Education and organized by the Hubei Provincial Government. It is under the direct administration of Hubei Provincial Department of Education and its history can be traced back to 1972. Located in the centre of China Optical Valley in Wuhan city, WHPT is one of the few most successful institutions in the regionalization, internationalization and modernization of higher vocational education. It is also one of the best higher vocational institutions in Hubei province in terms of the overall educational quality and the school-running conditions and level of WHPT. These achievements make it a well known educational brand of higher vocational education of the province and an institution with significant impacts on the higher vocational education of China.
WHPT has gained a large number of awards and honors in the past years. It is a National Demonstrative Institution of HigherVocational Education, a National Training Base for Urgently-needed Talents, a National Key Teacher Training Base for Vocational Education, a Demonstrative Base for the Cultivation of Talents with Advanced Skills and a National Advanced Unit of Vocational Education. It is also an Advanced Unit of College Students Employment Service in Hubei Province, and is among the top 50 in employment quality in institutions of higher vocational education in China. WHPT is also assessed as an Advanced Unit in Providing Scientific Service for Hubei Province, theonly higher vocational education institution on the Elite List of All Works of Hubei Province, and one of the 15 higher education institutes of good fame in the investigation conducted by Hubei Provincial Statistics Bureau.
WHPT covers an area of about 1 million square meters, with a total floor space of more than 0.6 million square meters. Its annual school-running fund reaches more than RMB 0.2 billion and total fixed assets amount to over RMB 1.106 billion, with the value of existing teaching facilities accounting for about RMB 0.168 billion. WHPT also owns 53 in-the-school training bases or centers, 211 well-equipped laboratories, 355 out-of-school training bases, and a book collection of 1.15 million volumes. Currently the polytechnic enrolls more than 22000 full time students, holds vocational technology training for over 18,000 people per annum, and provide society with more than about 6000 excellent graduates annually. It now has a staff of 1213, including 820 full-time teachers, among whom 291 are professors or associate professors, and 7 experts are awarded State Council or ProvincialGovernment Benefit. In addition, it maintains an average of 15 full-time foreign teachers every year. Presently, WHPT has 14 faculties, providing 73 diploma programs ranging from mechanics, electronics and construction to business, art design and tourism.
WHPT enrolls students from more than 30 provinces and cities of the country, and its graduates are greatly welcomed by enterprises for their strong professional ability and all-round quality, so their employment rate stabilizes at over 95%. It has initiated to set up three vocational education groups in terms of modern manufacturing, electronic information, and tourism. It also maintains a long-term cooperation relationship with more than 300 enterprises and establishes collaborative relationship with 41 colleges and educational institutions from 25 countries or regions. More than 400 alumni are now studying or working in Singapore, Australia, France, and the U.S. In recent years, WHPT has received guests and delegations from foreign educational institutions for more than 1000 times, providing excellent radiating and demonstrative effects educationally.
An institution of higher vocational education with excellent educational environment, advanced school-running ideas, targeted school-running orientation and strong overall strength, WHPT has now developed into an engineering-highlighted multidisciplinary vocational education institute incorporating management, liberal arts, economics and other disciplines.
