Prepare for Chinese Proficiency Test

General Introduction

Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) is a standardized test at the state level designed and developed by the HSK Center of Beijing Language and Culture University to assess the Chinese proficiency of non-native speakers (foreigners, overseas Chinese and students of Chinese national minorities). HSK consists of the basic Chinese proficiency test (HSK Basic), the elementary and intermediate Chinese proficiency test (HSK Elementary-Intermediate) and the advanced Chinese proficiency test (HSK Advanced). HSK is held regularly in China and other countries each year. Certificates of HSK will be issued to those who have secured the required scores.

 

HSK certificates are required in applying for most Chinese medium degree courses. But applicants who have none HSK certificates could get conditional offers. To pass school entrance exams, take 1 year pre-college course or 1 year Chinese language course would be acceptable, depending on school regulations. Applicants could enquire CUCAS service for further information (mail to: service@cucas.cn).

The Functions of HSK Certificates

A. To certify that the holder has acquired the required Chinese Proficiency to enter a college or university as an undergraduate or graduate student.

B. To certify that the holder can be exempt from taking the Chinese language course depending on the level of certification.

C. As a basis for the employers to evaluate the Chinese proficiency of the job applicants.

Period of Validity for HSK Certificates

The HSK certificate has a permanent validity, whereas the accompanying test report will only be valid for two years (beginning from the date of the test session) as the certification for foreign students to enter a college or university in China.

How to prepare for HSK?

HSK Elementary-Intermediate Applicants for Bachelor's Degree courses (Chinese medium) in Literature, History, or Traditional Chinese Medicine; Applicants for Master's Degree courses. Candidates should take Chinese language course for 1 year.
HSK Advanced Applicants for Doctoral Degree courses (Chinese medium). Candidates should take Chinese language course for 2 years.

Interpretation

HSK Threshold

1

Means the candidate is able to understand simple sentences and express simple ideas and capable of simple communication in his or her daily life and study.
A Chinese learner who has mastered about 600 common Chinese characters and the corresponding grammar can reach this standard.

2

The candidate has acquired the basic Chinese competence that can meet the demand of basic daily life, a certain range of social communication and study to some degree.

The candidate can fulfill the minimal requirements in Chinese proficiency to be admitted to study in Science, Engineering, Agriculture, and West Medicine in Chinese universities for a Bachelor's Degree.

The candidate can fulfill the requirements in Chinese proficiency to be admitted to study in Science, Engineering, Agriculture, and West Medicine in Chinese universities for a Bachelor's Degree.

HSK Elementary-Intermediate

The candidate can fulfill the minimal requirements in Chinese proficiency to be admitted to study in Literature, History, and Traditional Chinese Medicine in Chinese universities for a Bachelor's Degree.

HSK Advanced

The candidate has the advanced (low) Chinese language competence, which can be acquired after 3000 hours or more of regular modern Chinese language learning (or other Chinese learning experience equivalent to this). And this is the minimal standard to be qualified for the jobs requiring using Chinese for communication

This is the moderate standard to be qualified for the jobs requiring using Chinese as the communication language

This is the higher standard to be qualified for the jobs requiring using Chinese for communication and to be viewed as being qualified for a translator at the intermediate level.

How to sign up a HSK test

Currently, there are three ways to register for the HSK test.

A. On-line registration. Click here to go to the on-line registration page

B. Register on the spot

  • When registering in person, candidates must bring two recent 30 x 40 mm photos (without headwear) and present one piece of photo identification, such as a passport or a residence permit.
  • After registering, every candidate will get an admission ticket and a handbook about the HSK. Candidates should arrive at the site before the time specified on your admission ticket.

C. Register by mail

Candidates living where there are no local test centers may register by mail. Applications must be sent to the test center by registered mail at least one week before the final registration deadline and enclose a photocopy of an official piece of identification, a resume (including Chinese and English names, sex, nationality, and date of birth), a detailed mail address, and two recent 30 x 40 mm photos (without headwear). In addition, fees for the test and registration must be sent to the registration site by mail. No telephone registration will be accepted. The admission ticket will be given to the candidate in person upon his or her arrival at the testing site.
