The computer industry is popular worldwide; more and more people are beginning to study computing and related fields. Since many Chinese universities have established high-quality computer science programs, many of these students choose China as a destination for study. These large-scale schools can provide excellent educational resources and research equipment to international students. Some schools use English to conduct computer science classes. Currently Chinese universities use CUCAS’s Chinese University Recruitment System to process and accept international student applications online. The following information is designed to help you before you set out to study computer science in China.
China has a large number of available computer science programs. In recent years China's computer science field has emphasized independent creative thinking and individual ability. The combination of educational techniques and the computer science field mean that many universities in China have outstanding laboratory facilities. Faculty resources are also outstanding, and schools like Tsinghua University, Peking University and Nanjing University all have excellent faculty. Schools that focus on educational software development include Fudan University, Nankai University and the University of Science and Technology of China. Schools like Xidian University, Xi'an Jiaotong University and the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications have programs focusing on electronic communication hardware design, and Beijing Jiaotong University has an excellent English-language school of software design.
Chinese universities usually split computer science and technology into three different level-two subjects, including computer system structures, computer software and theory, and applied computer science.
The top five computer systems structures programs belong to Tsinhua University in Beijing, Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, Peking University in Beijing, Dongbei University in Shenyang and Xi'an Jiaotong University in Xi'an.
The top five computer software and theory courses are at Peking University, Nanjing University in Nanjing, Tsinghua University, Wuhan University in Wuhan and Shanghai's Fudan University.
The top five applied computer science programs can be found at Tsinghua University, Peking University, Tongji University, Southeast University in Nanjing and the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou.
Many of China's universities have computer science courses, and can be found in every region in the country. Beijing and Shanghai are China's two largest cities and are economic and cultural centers. These two cities have a number of excellent universities; Beijing Jiaotong University's English-language software engineering program is particularly recommended. Wuhan University's is home to the State Key Lab of Software Engineering, and the city has a relatively low cost of living.
