Introduction of North China Institute of Science and Technology

1. North China Institute of Science and Technology (NCIST) Introduction
North China Institute of Science and Technology (NCIST) is accountable to the State Administration of Work Safety. Based on the work of its predecessor, Beijing Coal Management Institute (set up by the former Ministry of Coal Industry in 1984), it was reorganized as North China Mining College in 1993. In 1997 The College was assessed and evaluated by the former State Education Commission as one of the 27 demonstrative and key construction engineering colleges in China . By the year 2002 another milestone was reached in the development of the college ― an upgrading to an undergraduate institute, which was renamed as North China Institute of Science and Technology.
NCIST covers a total area of 800 mu, and has a further building area of 450,000 sq.m . The facilities and equipment for teaching and research are currently valued at 140,000,000 Yuan. NCIST has two key laboratories of the provincial and ministerial level and it also owns a demonstration center of experimental teaching in Heibei province. Modern teaching technology is so widely applied in NCIST that it serves as a network base for the China Education and Research Network (CERNET).
The NCIST library has a large collection of 950,000 books and over 1600 newspapers and periodicals (in both Chinese and other languages). Additionally, it has several millions of digital books, together with more than 20 databases. The entire library reflects and supports the institute's areas of special expertise: the coal industry, engineering, mining, and safety technology.
Currently, NCIST has an excellent faculty team comprised of over 1,000 members in total, including more than 800 full-time and part-time teachers. Of all the professional teachers, about 76% hold masters or doctoral degrees and nearly 44% are professors or associate professors. Furthermore, NCIST also has 1 academician (external) of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 13 state-level senior experts specialized in various fields.
NCIST began to admit postgraduate students in the field of engineering (Safety Engineering) in 2012. NCIST offers 37 undergraduate programs, covering seven disciplinary fields: engineering, science, liberal arts, law, economics, management, education and arts, etc. Safety Technology and Engineering and Mining Engineering are provincial key disciplines; Safety Engineering, Mining Engineering and Automation are three undergraduate specialties which are listed by the Ministry of Education as special construction programs for their unique characteristics.
Over 16,000 full-time students are currently attending various academic or vocational courses at the institute. Once these students graduate, it is anticipated over 80% will attain full-time employment within their chosen specialty. Of all the undergraduates, as much as 13% are preparing for postgraduate examinations, and in particular, the postgraduate admission rate for the Safety Engineering major increases each year and currently exceeds 30%.
Currently, NCIST has eleven research centers distributed in the following fields, including gas prevention and control, water damage prevention and control, information and control technology and safety and social development, etc. The annual research fund is over 50 million yuan. Since the upgrading to an undergraduate institute, NCIST has signed 830 research contracts of various kinds with the fund amounting to 270 million yuan, which leads to an annual growth over 70%. Safety and other related disciplines develop certain unique characteristics and advantages in the research fields of gas and water damage prevention and control. Moreover, researches aiming at safety management, safety culture, safety laws, safety monitoring and other aspects are carried out systematically and comprehensively, which provides powerful support for shaping the characteristics of NCIST as being professional in safety technology.
The National Safety Training Center of Coal Mine (founded in 1985 at this institute) is an important training base for the State Administration of Work Safety. It provides the following training services on a regular basis, including mine safety supervision, mine rescue, emergency management and mine disaster prevention & control, etc. About 5,000 trainees accept training here annually.
NCIST maintains a long-term and stable cooperative relationship with UNDP and International Labor Organization; meanwhile, joint education programs have been started with higher learning institutions and research institutes from America and Canada to cultivate professionals. Presently, 18 long-term foreign experts and teachers are employed by the institute. Moreover, the current enrollment of international students is 103.
Guided by the school's motto “Enhancing Self Motivation and Cultivation, Safeguarding Production and the Nation”, the school has fostered and encouraged its spirit of “United, Industrious, Pragmatic and Innovative”. The school has also developed a pragmatic teaching style which aims to uphold a standard of excellence by “Pursuing Rigorous Scholarship, Imparting Knowledge and Educating People”. The school has created a sound academic atmosphere enabling all its teachers and students to enjoy “Learning, Thinking, Practicing and Creating”.
NCIST is working hard towards its goal of becoming a modern multi-disciplinary university characterized by professionalism in safety technology and a united disciplinary structure in engineering, science, management, economics, social sciences, humanities and law. It is making great efforts to build up a top-ranking training center training senior professionals and solving core technological problems of work safety.
