211 Project “211 Project“ was initiated in 1995 by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, it is a project to enhance the research standards of high-level universities and cultivating strategies for socio-economic development. So far China has more than 118 institutions of higher education were designated as 211 Project institutions, and from 1996 to 2000, approximately US$2.2 billion were distributed in this project. Among those universities, 6 percent for them having met certain scientific, technical, and human resources standards and offer advanced degree programs. Nowadays, four-fifths of doctoral students and one-third of undergraduates are trained by project 211 universities in China. What’s more, they offer 85% of the state's key subjects, hold 96 percent of the state's key laboratories, and utilize 70% of scientific research funding in China.

985 Project “985 Project” is a project aimed to increase the development speed and gain more reputation for China’s universities. The 985 project was announced by Chinese President Jiang Zemin at the 100th anniversary of Peking University on May 4, 1998. Tai'an (Chinese: 泰安; pinyin: Tài'ān) is a prefecture-level city in western Shandong province. Centered on Mount Tai, the city borders the provincial capital of Jinan to the north, Laiwu to the northeast, Zibo to the east, Linyi to the southeast, Liaocheng to the extreme west and Jining to the south. To the west, Tai'an is separated from the province of Henan by the Yellow River. Its population was 5,494,207 as of the 2010 census, of whom 1,735,425 lived in the built-up (or metro) area made of 2 urban districts (Taishan District and Daiyue District).
